Afya Plus in collaboration with IntraHealth International as a leading Partner and Tanzania Youth Alliance (TAYOA) supported the Government of Tanzania (GoT) to accelerate the scale-up and sustainability of Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) and Early Infant Male Circumcision (EIMC) for Maximum Public Health Impact on HIV prevention in Geita, Mara, Simiyu, Shinyanga and Mwanza region. This five-year project was funded by PEPFAR through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from 2016-2021.
The purpose of this project was to contribute to HIV epidemic control by supporting the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children (MOHCDGEC through the National AIDS Control Program (NACP) to strengthen and scale up a comprehensive package of quality, safe VMMC services among adolescents and adult men aged 10-29 years to reach 80 percent prevalence in supported regions by 2021 and integrate EIMC services in reproductive and child health (RCH) clinics for sustainability.
Under Tohara Plus, Afya Plus supported strengthening and scale up of a comprehensive package of quality, safe VMMC services and integration of EIMC services in reproductive and child health (RCH) clinics for sustainability in Mara region through application of evidence-based innovations, culturally appropriate interventions, people centered services coupled with digital solutions. As part of comprehensive package, Afya Plus integrated STI/RTI screening and management, GBV health education, condom promotion, and improving bidirectional referral system at both facility and community levels.
